Moroccan Magic: Emma Gurner Transforms Small Bathrooms with R2’s Platform Range

Small space and tight budgets shouldn’t stop homeowners from dreaming big when it comes to designing their ultimate family bathroom.

That’s according to British bathroom specialists R2 Bathrooms and award-winning interior designer Emma Gurner, who has unveiled her take on the typical family bathroom – and it’s anything but average.

Channelling the colours and textures of Morocco, Emma used R2 Bathroom’s Platform range to create a practical family bathroom bursting with international flair and character.

Building her design around traditional Moroccan Zellige tiles in a beautiful shade of ochre, Emma tackled her biggest problem first – size.

Emma said: “For me, the most challenging part of designing a bathroom is you’re often working with small, awkward spaces.

“You’ve got to fit big items like baths and vanities into tight areas, while also managing plumbing and electrics — all before you even start thinking about making it look good!

“Embrace the practicalities early on, so you can focus on the creative process with clarity later down the line.”

To complement the Moroccan tiles, Emma chose a wood-effect vanity unit from R2 Bathrooms’ Platform range and layered in accessories with similar wooden tones.

Emma said: “It tied the whole look together. Then I brought in blue tones in the paintwork, which really set off the ochre in the tiles beautifully.”

A splash of pink in the form of a velvet ottoman added softness and warmth to make the space feel more characterful.

Emma added: “Platform was really easy to work with. There were lots of size and colour options, and I loved the modular extras like the shelving unit I added to the side.”

The flexibility of the range makes Platform ideal for creating a look that feels both bespoke and practical — perfect for adapting to awkward or compact layouts.

Zoe Jones, Interior Designer for R2 Bathrooms, said: “Platform combines elegance with functionality, and because it is an incredibly versatile collection, there are endless design opportunities as Emma’s characterful scheme shows.”

Emma’s Top Tips

  • Find out where your pipes are, especially the toilet waste pipe. It’s often not something you can move
  • Measure accurately
  • Create a scale floorplan, either digitally or by hand
  • Use cut-outs to experiment with different layouts
  • Create a moodboard with colours, textures and inspirational images

The Platform Collection is available now from R2 Bathrooms, with prices starting at £493.
