After several years of statement shades, colour drenching and bold decorating choices, interiors are beginning to take a quieter turn.
That’s according to independent flooring retailer Stories Flooring, who say homeowners are increasingly looking to texture rather than colour to bring character, warmth and interest into their rooms.
From boucle sofas and woven fabrics to rustic timber, natural stone and plush rugs, tactile finishes are helping create spaces that feel layered and considered without relying on strong colour.
Yarl Christie, Founder of Stories Flooring, said: “Texture can completely change the way a room feels. It adds depth, warmth and visual interest, but in a much softer way than introducing another bold colour or pattern.
“We’re seeing more interiors built around calm, understated palettes, and in those spaces texture becomes incredibly important.”
One of the easiest places to see this shift towards texture is underfoot, where homeowners are increasingly looking beyond colour alone and considering grain, finish, pattern and the natural character of the material.
Wood flooring is particularly well suited to the trend because no two surfaces feel completely uniform. Brushed grains, distressed finishes and visible markings can all bring another layer of interest to a room, while herringbone and wide-plank formats add texture through the way the boards themselves are laid.
