From Ebbor Stone to Birch: The Paint Shades Bringing Nature Home

The natural world is continuing to influence design choices, both inside and out of the home, according to new data from eco paint brand Thorndown.

Analysis of sales of their 2.5-litre tins of exterior wood and interior wall paint from January 2025 through to December 2025 shows nature-inspired shades dominated.

Inside, homeowners looked to earthy neutrals with Ebbor Stone and Doulting Stone taking the top two spots in Thorndown’s top 20 best-selling wall paints. Outside, Birch and UV Clear were two of the biggest sellers, behind Blackdown – a pure black opaque shade – which topped the best-selling wood paint chart.

Caroline Thornborough, Design Director at Thorndown, said: “In the last year, rich earthy and softer stone tones have ascended in popularity with colours influenced by the land, and we see this continuing into 2026. The desire to escape into the country and be enveloped by nature is a strong urge in this digital world where work and constant notifications can dominate life.

“But we are also seeing pops of vibrant colours appearing as a strong rebellion to the world of grey, brightening up homes and lives by adding instant impact and drama.”

Heritage colours remain firm favourites across all paint ranges with Field Green, Old Sage Green and Bishop Blue proving just as popular in the wall paint range as they are in wood paint.

Blackdown, Bishop Blue, Swan White and Whey White also appeared in both lists.

Thorndown is a specialist paint manufacturer that creates technically excellent,water-based wood and wall paints. Thorndown was founded on the principles of creating the best possible products with leading ingredients that respect and work with the natural environment.

Thorndown’s range of wood and wall paints are available now, priced at £22 for 750ml.
